Angular lifting changes how the force travels through the eyebolt, creating bending and off-axis loading that can quickly exceed what a simple eye is designed to handle. Eyebolt designs specify how loads are carried, and the shoulder eyebolt includes a shoulder that bears against the lifting point, guiding the load along the shank and preventing the eye from tilting or bending when pulled at an angle. This built‑in support gives a defined load path and helps maintain the rated strength under angular loads, making it the only eyebolt type approved for angular lifts within the angle and load limits specified. A standard eyebolt lacks that shoulder support, so pulling at an angle imposes bending stress on the eye and can lead to failure. Clevis eyebolt and hook configurations do not provide the same controlled load path or rating for off-axis loads, so they are not suitable for angular lifting under ASME B30.26.
